L-derly Befrienders

L-derly Befrienders conduct weekly visits to elderly staying in one-room flats in Jalan Bukit Merah provide LB-ians with an opportunity to interact with our beneficiaries. In addition to providing a listening ear, LB-ians also chat with the elderly, help out in doing household chores as well as do grocery shopping with them.

Through these small acts, we hope to make a difference in the lives of our beneficiaries and strengthen the bonds between volunteers and the elderly. Truly, as our mottos states, ‘We befriend, They be loved’!

T. H. E. Seniors

T.H.E. (Touch the Hearts of the Elderly) Seniors is a volunteering programme that provides opportunities for volunteers to work regularly with the elderly who live alone in one-room flats in Geylang Bahru. It is a joint project between NUS CSC and TOUCH Community Services (TCS).

We visit the homes of the elderly to chat with them and help them with simple household chores. Apart from regular visits, we also have celebrations lined up for special occasions such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year where we spend time making lanterns together with the elderly to decorate their homes. That’s not all! We even have outings to concerts and places such as the Southern Ridges!

Havenue

HCA Hospice Care is a registered charity that provides comfort and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Our volunteers visit the terminally-ill patients weekly and conduct befriending sessions and also some basic housekeeping. We’ll spend most of our time talking to them and engaging in activities such as bringing them to coffee shops to have their lunch and even singing Karaoke! Even though our beneficiaries are terminally-ill, you can hardly tell it as they are cheerful and lively. Frequently, they will share their interesting stories that happened during their youth with us. Visits are fun activities not only for the beneficiaries but for the volunteers as well!

Our Beneficiaries

CSC Day IX is an opportunity for CSC volunteers to bond and interact with various groups of beneficiaries coming from the elderly, children & youth and the intellectually disabled sectors.

We have prepared exciting games with a kampung flavour to instill a sense of kampung (community) spirit. We hope that everyone will enjoy the programmes we have lined up so that our volunteers can gain exposure and have a better insight on the various RVPs.

1. YOUTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME (YMP)

Mentorship is a year-long programme where volunteers will be paired with a youth mentee to provide companionship, leadership as well as assistance in the mentee’s academic work.

Volunteers will take up the role of mentors and act as role-models to the youths, allowing the mentees to feel appreciated and respected as an individual. Our main aim is to establish friendship ties between mentors and mentees so that mentees can learn from the mentors how to make the right decisions in life and take up responsibilities to shine as a young adult in time to come.

2. YOUTH CLUBHOUSE PROGRAMME (YCP)

The Youth Clubhouse is a fun-filled place for youths to hang out after school hours. A unique feature that is different from other youths’ drop-in centre is the operation of a café with the sales of food and drinks.
Volunteers will be involved in the operation of the café as well as engaging the youths in different activities in our clubhouse. (E.g. Boardgames, Pool, Wii, Table-tennis, Jamming Studio, etc) The main aim of this drop-in café is to build a strong sense of trust between the volunteers and the youths through the interaction in the activities so that volunteers can be both a friend and a role-model to the youths.

Yishun Reading Stars

The Yishun Reading Stars (YRS) Programme is conducted at Yishun Students Care Service Centre every Friday. It consists of 7 sessions of fun and laughter where volunteers seek to help children who have difficulties reading or communicating in English. These children, who range from 7-11 years old, are referred by the Educational Psychologists from the Student Centre and have limited exposure to English in their home environment. YRS helps equip the children with some basic life skills such as how to interact positively with their peers, manage their emotions, and why each and every one of them is unique in their own special ways.

Dayspring

Located along Turf Club Road, Dayspring Residential Treatment Centre (RTC) serves as a safe and caring home for teenage girls who have suffered the trauma of abuse. The centre aims to bring hope and helps to heal these girls by providing a supportive and nurturing environment. Dayspring’s vision is to see every girl, and women, especially those at risk, live a life of purpose and hope; making peace with her past, finding purpose in the present, and renewed hope for the future.

Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled

Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled (BHID) is a residential home specially built to create a conducive environment for people with intellectual disabilities. With rooms beautifully decorated with colourful murals, the home provides a community setting which encourages social interaction and training of pre-vocational skills.

Our volunteers interact with and befriend the residents to help them develop their social capabilities, motor skills and intellectual abilities amongst many other essential life skills. By involving them into a wider social network, it is hoped that they can lead a more joyful life and integrate better into the society. In the process, volunteers learn to be more appreciative and open-minded as well.

MINDSville @ Napiri

Situated at Lorong Napiri, MINDSville@Napiri is one of the residential homes run by the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) to cater to the needs of the intellectually disabled. The home aims to maximize the potential of intellectually disabled persons by helping them to live as independent a life as possible. With the belief that they too have the right to take their place in society just like any another person, the home seeks to promote public awareness and acceptance of persons with intellectual disability.

Every Saturday, our volunteers gather at MINDSville to interact with the residents of the home and work hand in hand with fellow volunteers from Terra Hope (a project under MINDS Youth Group) to help the residents develop motor skills and independent living skills through a range of enriching activities such as art and craft, music, exercise and food preparation

Best Buddies (Pending)

Best Buddies is a vibrant, non-profit organization with an international presence in almost 1500 middle school, high schools and college chapters worldwide. First established in the United States, the 1-to-1 befriending program was brought into Singapore as a new chapter in 2006.

Through the support of College Buddies (you!), Best Buddies Singapore aims to allow clients with mild intellectual or developmental disabilities (buddies) to gain independence in our society, which they are perfectly capable of, but lack due to the limitations on their social circle and skills.

Through interaction with their volunteer buddies, many clients have gone on to lead inspiring lives, secure proper jobs and foster abilities to cope with life on their own. Most importantly, we hope that friendships forged along the way would serve as a memorable journey of fun and mutual development for both you and your buddy!
